1 German-Netherlands Corps (1GNC) is the Land Component Command HQ of the NATO Response Force (NRF), the Alliance’s rapid reaction force, in 2023. What does it take for a headquarters to fulfil this role? And what are the challenges lying ahead for the NRF against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine? Lieutenant General Nico Tak, Commander of 1GNC and the NRF land forces, spoke about these issues with the Dutch military magazine ‘de Militaire Spectator’. ‘Scale, mass, and size matter again’, he says. ‘War in Europe cannot be prevented with battalion-sized units, the continent cannot be kept safe that way.’
